Since September 2019, the biomethane plant in Sinsheim operated by MVV, a German energy provider, and AVR, a waste recycling company, has been in regular operation feeding biomethane produced from bio-waste into the German grid. Around 60,000 tons of biogenic waste are annually fermented and dried into certified compost. This compost contributes to the formation of humus and will contribute regional agriculture as a long-term organic fertilizer. The raw biogas produced in the fermentation process is processed into biomethane before it is fed into the natural gas grid via a new 4.3 km long gas pipeline built by MVV. Each year, biomethane with an energy content of around 51 million kilowatt hours is to be produced.
