Stadtwerke Schwäbisch Hall constructed a micro biogas network, separate from the natural gas network, to transport biogas from the agglomeration/rural areas to municipal utilities’ heating and power stations in the urban region. The municipality operates several CHP plants, which provide 100% of the district heating network to the city. The micro biogas grid enables the construction of small biogas plants at the location where liquid manure is produced. At the same time, an effective, largely complete use of heat is achieved. Within the biogas grid, the local energy supplier has the flexibility to use the biogas for heating purposes or to upgrade it to biomethane.
