SSAB’s, LKAB’s and Vattenfall’s joint initiative HYBRIT aims to replace coking coal, traditionally needed for ore-based steel making, with fossil free energy and hydrogen. In August 2020, a pilot plant for fossil free steel production at the SSAB site in Luleå, Sweden opened. The goal is to have a solution for fossil-free steel by 2035. The HYBRIT concept enables the decoupling of energy carriers and reduction agents generating carbon dioxide. If successful, HYBRIT means that Sweden’s CO2 emissions can be reduced by 10% and Finland’s by 7%.
